Orgin of Diamonds

Undying passion, eternal devotion and love everlasting? Diamonds have been synonymous with these universal emotions ever since the days of the ancient Greeks. The story of the diamond, the world’s oldest and most beloved gemstone, dates back more than a billion years. Comprised entirely of carbon that is crystallized deep beneath the earth's surface, diamonds are the hardest substance known to man and the purest of all the world's gemstones.

Humans did not record the discovery of  the diamond until around 500 B.C., when the first diamonds were found in India. Back then the technology for cutting a diamond into a multi-facetted treasure had yet to be developed. Nor was there any drilling equipment to dig for diamonds on the subterranean level. The rough, uncut diamonds were usually found in riverbeds and kept as good luck charms. Around 1074, a Hungarian queen made the first known attempt to use diamonds as jewelry when she set her crown with uncut diamonds.  By the time the British and French royalty took to wearing the gems during the Renaissance, the world had developed crude means of diamond cutting and polishing.

Diamond jewelry became all the rage with the aristocrats of 16th Century England, and has not gone out fashion since.   The diamond-enamored royals and gentry relied solely on India’s diamond supply until resources dried up in the eighteenth century. No sooner had India’s reserves dwindled than Brazil took over as the world’s leading source. After Brazil came South Africa and then Siberia. Today, you’ll find diamond mines dotting every corner of the globe, from South Africa, Botswana and Sierra Leone to Russia, Australia and Western Canada.
